Dear all,
I have been with TWB as Executive Director for just over five months now. So far it has been an exciting, challenging and inspiring time. I believe that Translators without Borders has great potential: we can ensure that language is a priority in every humanitarian and development program, bridging the language gap for many more people. TWB can be the organization that ensures health and nutrition content is available in minor languages, empowering people to make vital decisions about their own lives. This is potentially transformative.
We are not there, yet. We must change a few things first. Our systems need renovating and professionalization, and to expand our impact we will need to rethink our funding models. As an organization, we could also be doing more to develop the translation industry.
We can get there; TWB has had remarkable outputs so far – punching far above our weight. I am so grateful and thankful for all the work that has been done – 35 million translated words for non-profit organizations is a lot, and building the first crisis relief translation network is a great achievement. Our services are expanding; we are already changing the face of humanitarian response in Greece. We can build on this, leverage it, and help more people.
I envision that TWB will professionalize the management of the organization and value volunteerism by becoming bolder advocates about the importance of effective communications, supporting the development of the industry and ensuring that our tools work for our volunteers and partners. I would like people to tell me that because of Translators without Borders, they have information they need and understand so they can live their lives with more dignity.
TWB can change a part of the world for the better and help save lives. I look forward to working with you to make this happen.
